s/p 24 hr weekend call

Just finished my first surgery weekend call. 800am Saturday to 800am Sunday + regular team rounds.

I had no idea what to really expect when I started surgery rotation. OR time of course but aside from that... There's actually a lot of patient management going on which I didn't think about. I'm on colorectal service right now so we only go into the OR on Mondays and Wednesdays and possibly do colonoscopies on Fridays. The rest of the time is spent more on patient management. I actually find myself enjoying CRS. Even though you get obsessed with patients passing gas and having bowel movements. We had a patient s/p colostomy who had nothing in her stoma bag for about 3 days or so and having all this pain, only on tea and coffee diet and today she had all this gas in her bag, it was totally puffed up, so exciting! Sounds kinda lame though.

Anyways, so far it isn't as bad as people make it out to be, but I think it might be because I'm MS3. The interns are worked pretty hard. And the whole 5 year residency, I don't know if that's something I would be able to do. All the girls that I've worked with are really tough. My senior resident has a 6mo old baby and the day that she delivered she actually did a surgery that morning. My fellow lives apart from her husband and flies out to see him on the weekends when she can.

I've surprised myself in that I'm able to wake up at 400am or earlier everyday and still end up awake the whole day while at the hospital and even through the lectures in the middle of the day/morning. Granted I sometimes need to use food to get by.

Can't wait for more surgery. My residents are great, the attendings (one of them anyways) is awesome, enjoying the patient management.

Oh yeah. Also, in case anyone was wondering, there's actually quite a bit of "drama" that goes on in the hospital. "Gray's Anatomy" drama didn't just spring up out of nowhere. Doctors, nurses, cheating, etc does go on. Of course not everyone, but there are people who are involved. Interesting gossip going down last night while on call. Tututu...
